Discover why the Spanish Golden Visa is the ONLY option for Ibero-Americans in 2025…
For the overwhelming majority of Golden Visa applicants seeking to obtain a second passport, the Portuguese Golden Visa program – historically, at least – has been an attractive option.
The reason?
Golden Visa residents can apply for Portuguese citizenship after just 5 years of residency.
Whereas in Spain, you’d need to hold legal residency – and adhere to lengthy minimum in-country stay requirements, in addition to renouncing your original citizenship(s), and giving up your existing passport(s) – for 10 long years.
But for citizens of the so-called Ibero-American nations, Spain offers a far more advantageous path to citizenship: If you hail from one of these countries, you can obtain Spanish citizenship through naturalization after only 2 years, instead of the standard 10 years.
(Article 22 of the Spanish Civil Code (the codigo civil in Spanish) governs the minimum residency requirements for various groupings of people. Refugees, for example, can apply for Spanish citizenship after 5 years of residency, whereas the spouses of Spanish citizens can apply after just 1 year.
And for Ibero-Americans who don’t need to work, and who are intent on living in Spain permanently, the Non-Lucrative Residency can also be an option to qualify for this fast-tracked naturalization in Spain).
And best of all?
As a citizen of one of these Latin American countries, you don’t have to renounce your native citizenship in order to become a Spanish citizen:
If you were to apply for Spanish citizenship as a citizen of the UK, USA or South Africa, you’d have to give up your native citizenship. But if you’re from an Ibero-American country, Spain allows you to hold dual citizenship.

What are the requirements for this fast-track naturalization route in Spain?
Over the years our clients for Spain’s Golden Visa have included Argentines, Filipinos, Venezuelans, Cubans, Costa Ricans, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Peruvians, Guatemalans, as well as Colombians, to name only a few of the nationalities eligible for fast-track Spanish citizenship by naturalization…
If you are a citizen of any of the above Ibero-American countries, the key legal requirement to qualify for citizenship via the 2-year naturalization route is to complete 2 years of “continuous residency” in Spain.
The DGRN (La Dirección General de los Registros y del Notariado) is the governing body that confers nationality. The DGRN is not to be confused with the UGE (La Unidad de Grandes Empresas), the entity that grants some residence permits – including the Spanish Golden Visa.
In prior years, the DGRN had been known to enforce the interpretation of continuous residency more strictly as residing in Spain for at least 183 days per year.
Recently, however, the DGRN has modified its stance to imply that continuous residency has less to do with the applicant’s physical presence or absence, but rather, their perceived degree of affinity to the Spanish territory.
Moreover, while the time spent in Spain need not be consecutive, it is advisable to not have a single absence of more than 3 months in the qualifying residency period if you’re seeking to apply for Spanish citizenship in 2024 and beyond.
There are some “standard” requirements to be met – e.g. you cannot have had a criminal record in the past 5 years, and you’re not allowed to owe the Spanish revenue service, known as Hacienda, any taxes.
In addition, you must pass the A2 Level DELE Spanish Test – unless you can prove that your schooling was received in Spanish.
And finally, you will also have to pass the CCSE Culture Test (conocimientos constitucionales y socioculturales de España) from the Instituto Cervantes to qualify for Spanish citizenship by residency.
(Note: There is no limit to the number of times either of these tests may be taken. It’s also worth noting that you don’t have to first apply for Spanish permanent residency in order to apply for Spanish citizenship.)
